The Company

First National Bank is the oldest bank in South Africa, and is a provider of personal, commercial and corporate banking services to more than 7.2 million customers across the country. It is also the single largest contributor to FirstRand's bottom-line.

FNB created a series of concept stores, using their new dotFNB brand and wanted a new and immersive way to engage with their customers at point-of-sale.

Our approach

endjin's Next Generation UI experts worked with FNB's local partners, Origin Interactive, to translate their design concept and wire frames into an application running on Microsoft's PixelSense™ device. This is a large-format touch-enabled screen supplied by Samsung.

In addition to the usual banking and credit card facilities, stores offer a range of additional services including mobile phone contracts and fuel rewards.

The application was designed to show customers how they could save money by transferring some or all of these services to the bank.

The customer can sort through a series of questions on the table, changing their answers to see what would happen if, for example, they saved more, or added a new mobile phone contract.

The Results

Although this was a concept-store project, the results had to be accurate, as they reflected a customer's financial affairs.

We worked with the bank's business managers to build a comprehensive suite of executable business specifications that define the financial calculations required.

We then used these to build a calculation and financial planning engine which can be used by the PixelSense™ application.

This approach produced a rock-solid solution in less than two weeks, and the overall project is now being rolled-out to an additional 10-15 stores.
